Americans Are Saving Thousands Each Year On Medical Expenses

Fort Collins, CO (PRWEB) July 15, 2008

Now more than ever, Americans need a solution to their health care dilemmas. There are about 40 million people uninsured in the States and those who do have insurance are paying for coverage that is too expensive for the little benefits they receive. HSA for America has a new video that details how Health Savings Accounts can help benefit you and your family’s healthcare needs.

“To add on to these problems, rates continue to rise – including for those that have limitations and exclusions on their plans. Unless the deductibles are met, no benefits are given,” explains Wiley Long, President of HSA for America.

Health Savings Accounts offer a solution to the health care crisis in America. Those who are insured with an HSA plan get more affordable insurance, generous tax breaks, and they also benefit from health insurance protection against major medical bills.

Many also sign up for HSA plans because the money in the HSA can be used to pay for alternative medicine. Traditional health insurance plans typically restrict coverage for chiropractic, acupuncture, even dental and vision care, but with an HSA, the insured can have it all. “Many people flock to Health Savings Accounts because of their flexibility and the control they receive over their health care”, added Long.

HSA holders are able to withdraw and deposit tax-free dollars into and from the account for any medical expenses they’d wish to pay for. Most will save 40-50% with the HSA-qualified health insurance plan compared to a conventional copay plan.

The money accumulated rolls over each year and when the time for retirement comes, the account acts like an IRA, allowing you to use the tax-free money. If the account is kept after retirement, the money keeps rolling over. In a personal account, up to $ 2900 annually can be saved and $ 5800 annually can be accumulated with a family account. Individuals between 55 and 64 can save even more.

All medical/alternative treatments (besides cosmetic surgeries), medications and supplements are covered.

In depth answers are available on the HSA for America video and web site, at http://www.health–Savings–accounts.com. The video and web site go into detail about the benefits of having an HSA and how to easily set one up.

HSA for America is one of the leading providers of health savings accounts, health reimbursement accounts, and related information for employees and small business owners across America. HSA accounts are an effective way of saving money on healthcare costs and taxes and have an investment module at the very same time. Meals on Wheels Helps to Ease Poverty in Africa

(PRWEB) June 28, 2010

Statistics on poverty in Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region in the world in which poverty is not declining. Millions of Africans live without the material necessities of life and without access to basic resources, namely: housing, running water, electricity, healthcare and food. As a result, they are unable to sustain life and are without hope for change. One-third of Africans are malnourished, one in six children die before the age of five and half of the Sub-Saharan population survives on less than one dollar per day. More than 800 million people go to bed hungry daily. The average life expectancy of an African is 41. Clearly, surviving is the goal: living is the prize. Statistics on poverty in Africa.

The causes of poverty in Africa

The causes of Africa?s poverty are debatable and ever-changing. What is certain is that they are many: colonisation, the mismanagement of resources, war, natural disaster and famine; apartheid, poor African leadership and political instability; economic stagnation and global market flux. The HIV/Aids epidemic is the greatest current threat to African poverty: more than 18 million people have died to date from the epidemic, of which over 3 million were children. More than 25 million adults are currently infected. This adult infection rate has a direct effect on the number of children left without parents ? and, in some cases, without caretakers. As a result, Africa is now home to more than 15 million orphans, many of whom rely on their elderly grandparents for food and sustenance. Enter: Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels is a humanitarian initiative that strives to bring relief to the country?s less fortunate and aged, irrespective of colour, class or culture, in the form of the delivery of home-cooked meals, food parcels, soup kitchens, annual Christmas dinners, shelter and even nursing education. As far as possible, help is granted wherever it is needed.

Poverty as a way of life in Africa

Poverty is a way of life in most of Africa ? the only experience of life many poor Africans have. It means walking kilometres to get water and collect firewood; it means losing friends and family to HIV/Aids; it means suffering from malaria, typhoid, cholera, pneumonia and TB. Poverty is ?going empty? into an uncertain future. Poverty, for most Africans, is real.

The poor are the unemployed, the homeless, the ill-paid; those who were shut out from resources due to population growth or careless use of power and wealth. The newest group of the poor are the victims of the Aids epidemic: the children of the sick, the staggering number of orphans, and the elderly who become the sole providers for broken families. The poor are normal people who are, for many reasons, unable to help their desperate situations. The result of this, without structured help, is that the poor get poorer while the rich get richer.

Meals on Wheels in action in Africa

This is why Meals on Wheels is an organisation that strives to alleviate Africa?s poverty crisis; that believes tackling hunger is vital to solving poverty; that is powered by the strength of community service. MOW, and the many volunteers who deliver nutritious meals to the homes of the elderly and needy, provides a platform to catalyse this change. In seven southern African countries the number of people in need of emergency food aid in 2010 has risen from 3.5 million to 8.3 million. The link between malnutrition and illness in Africa is staggering ? the link between starvation and death even more so. Within South Africa, MOW prepares meals at over 350 venues; uses 182 vehicles, 623 volunteers and 931 staff; and delivers 6.27 million meals per year. Change is possible. Filling empty bellies with healthy food is possible. Offering help to those who most need it is possible.

Meals on Wheels believes that it is time to tackle the problems of Africa ? where, every 30 seconds, a child dies of malaria; every day 6 000 people die of Aids and every 3.6 seconds a person dies of starvation. The cry for immediate action is loud. The effects of poverty are blinding. The time to act is now. Driven by Africa?s poverty, MOW offers a channel for change. Join Meals on Wheels? mission and help us to help to feed Africa?s hunger.

Oxfam urges Australians to Help ?Stop Hunger? Through a Tax Deductible Donation

(PRWEB) June 29, 2010

International aid agency Oxfam is calling on Australians to dig deep to help its [?Stop Hunger? Appeal reach its target of almost $ 2 million before the end of the financial year. Oxfam Australia Executive Director Andrew Hewett said the appeal was aimed at helping people in some of the poorest countries in the world to have enough food to feed their families.

?A recent UN report has predicted that food prices could rise by as much as 40 per cent over the next decade. It?s estimated around a billion people around the world are already undernourished. It is vital that we act now to help stop hunger,? Mr Hewett said. Oxfam works in countries like Timor-Leste, where more than one-third of the population regularly experience food shortages at a time of the year known as the ?hungry season?, which often lasts for two to three months. ?Oxfam has been training people in Timor-Leste in growing food and nutrition, so that they have enough food to eat and sell, and so that their children can have a healthy diet,? Mr Hewett said. ?We know that many Australian families appreciate what it?s like to be confronted with rising food prices, and Oxfam is grateful for the support Australians provide, which allows us to help people in some of the poorest countries in the world.

?We are asking all Australians to try to find a little extra before the end of this financial year and help us do more to try to stop hunger.? [Oxfam?s ?Stop Hunger? Appeal is being supported by acclaimed chef and author Kylie Kwong, who has challenged Australians to imagine life cooking recipes with only one vegetable.

?Many poor communities around the world are surviving on only one type of vegetable and are at severe risk of hunger and malnutrition because they do not have access to the diverse range of produce that we take for granted in Australia,? Ms Kwong said. ?I passionately believe that by providing people with the skills and knowledge to grow and prepare nutritious food, we can stop hunger.?

$ 50 can provide a health-monitoring kit containing weighing scales and a thermometer to help identify children at risk of malnutrition

$ 80 can give urgent food by providing four families with vegetable seeds and trees, ensuring children have the nutrition they need to survive.

$ 196 can train 28 people in farming techniques to grow a variety of crops and increase yields.

A Garden Tour with Soul: OBUGS 3rd Annual Art & Garden Tour – Oakland & Lafayette, CA

(PRWEB) June 29, 2010

OBUGS (Oakland Based Urban Gardens) really knows how to throw a Garden Tour. With amazing gardens, terrific food, first rate live music, and a pretty exciting raffle, this year?s OBUGS Garden Tour promises to be a great time.

Garden tours are often pretty staid affairs, but that?s not the OBUGS style. Think of it more like a moving party, building up to a real bash at the final stop.

OBUGS? mission is rooted in the magic combination of food and gardens – so the food has to be memorable. No catered hors d?oevres here! The food will be prepared by volunteers under the guidance of Board Member Giovanna Tanzillo, whose Italian cooking is legendary in Oakland.

OBUGS (http://www.obugs.org) is a West Oakland non-profit that teaches urban children about nutrition, health, science and the environment through experiential learning in edible outdoor classrooms.

The first garden on this tour is OBUGS most recent addition. At St. Martin de Porres School in West Oakland, students have created a thriving vegetable garden on top of an asphalt lot. At this garden, tour goers will get a taste of what OBUGS does for hundreds of kids, and pick up directions for the other gardens.

Heading through the tunnel to Lafayette, this year?s tour includes 3 large gardens in a walkable 2.5 mile loop through the hills. Tour-goers have the choice of taking the shuttles, walking (actually a bit more like hiking), or biking (via BART from West Oakland) ? with snacks served at each place.

The Lafayette gardens include two by Ace Architects. First is a new garden, with colors and textures keyed to a new ultra-modern corten-sided home designed by an architect for his own family. The other, a more established and very different garden which has been on a number of private museum and garden tours in the past, has just been much expanded. The third garden, created over 40 years, is a lovely set of outdoor room around a courtyard, with decorative iron and an Italianate palette.

Those who can?t make the tour should still consider the raffle tickets. First prize is a 3 night stay at ?the Palms? on Maui. Other prizes include a half day sailing trip for two in San Francisco Bay on a beautiful wooden yacht, bicycle trip gear worth $ 100 from Mojo Bicycle Caf

The Secret to Weight Loss is to Eat Alkaline – A Delicious, Alkaline Only Cook Book Has Just Launched!

Del Mar, CA (PRWEB) June 30, 2010

If you are one of the millions of people who have tried the increasingly popular Alkaline Diet, but have been left hungry and bored after days of salads, seeds and broccoli ? then get ready to breathe a sigh of relief!

Ross Bridgeford, alkaline diet expert and author of The Alkaline Diet Recipe Book, has achieved the seemingly impossible. He has created an entire book of alkaline recipes that are truly delicious. In fact, if you picked up the book without reading the cover you would never think that this was a healthy recipe book.

Having lived and coached the alkaline diet for the past six years, Ross understands how intimidating it can appear to newbies at first, ?I remember it being a little confusing reading about which foods were acid and which were alkaline. Even as someone who considered myself healthy, I was left wondering what I was going to eat!?.

But Ross has succeeded where others have failed, and has made the alkaline diet both tasty and filling. Through communicating with over a hundred thousand readers through his alkaline diet website and blog, energiseforlife.com, he has developed over a hundred recipes that will alkalise the body and leave you feeling energetic and vibrant. ?The idea behind the book is to make the alkaline diet easy ? to make it easy to live a normal life and eat real food but still live alkaline and get all of the benefits that this diet provides.?

Launched last weekend at a high profile health seminar in Montreux, Switzerland with Tony Robbins? health guru, Joseph McClendon III, the book has proved an immediate hit. ?People have obviously been crying out for a realistic and usable alkaline cookbook for a long time. We sold every copy we had at the launch within an hour and I?ve been getting emails every day from people thanking me for writing this book!?

The praise has come from far and wide, but most notably from Rose Elliott MBE, the bestselling vegetarian cookery writer who wrote ?I love this book; the fresh, easy, delicious recipes and beautiful photos make it a joy to use and an inspiration to anyone wanting to improve their health and vitality?

High praise from the queen of vegetarian cookery!

However, it is not surprising when you take a look through Ross?s recipes. He?s used his years of experience and experimentation to make big favourites such as curries, pastas, lasagnes, chillis, fajitas and more, truly alkaline, while still retaining their mouth-watering flavor.

How?

?I knew that with some recipes it is just impossible to remove the dairy, meat, sugar and keep the same flavours and textures. That is why it has taken me so many years to finish this book! The recipes I?ve published are almost identical in taste to the originals but are 100% alkaline. I substitute ingredients as little as possible so you?re still effectively having the real deal ? there are no ?mock meats? or fake cheeses, the recipes all use real, fresh ingredients?.

Hale Clinic nutritionist, Gareth Edwards has found the book a godsend, ?This book is packed with tasty, nutritious and inspiring meals that are quick and easy to make. Ross?s enthusiasm for the subject shines through in every page. I?ll definitely be recommending this book to my patients. It should make my job as a nutritional therapist a lot easier!?

Best of all, an occasional treat or a blow out meal is positively encouraged. One of Ross?s main philosophies is that we should allow ourselves to live in balance and not deny ourselves. Now that’s a diet anyone can stick to.

If you are serious about getting your health in check and boosting your energy then the Alkaline Diet Recipe Book is a must!

The Alkaline Diet Recipe Book is a 132 page full-colour paperback featuring over 100 alkaline breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. It is available from http://www.energiseforlife.com for

Kalala?s poem, translated here for the first time into English from the original French, is at times an elegy to the bygone splendor of pre-colonial Africa, yet is ultimately uplifting in the poet?s ever-hopeful message to his people: Peoples of Congo, Peoples of Africa! Destiny is yours; so is choice!
